The "Judge" who pronounces Nancy's death sentence at the start of the play is not described at all (40). The phrase "his gavel" confirms the assumption that he is male - as are all the many judges in the Yoknapatawpha fictions; those other judges are also all 'white' and 'upper class,' which is the basis for our other assumptions about this judge (41).
