The "man named Sutpen" brings "thirty-odd men slaves" with him when he comes to Yoknapatawpha (30). According to the narrator, these men are "even wilder and more equivocal than the native wild men" - i.e. the Indians (30). They speak the "Carib-Spanish-French of the Sugar Islands" - i.e. the Caribbean (30). (In Absalom!, the number of slaves that Sutpen brings with him from the Caribbean is twenty.)
