Biography:

When Will Falls tells Old Bayard the story of how Yankees almost caught Colonel John Sartoris at his plantation during the Civil War, he mentions that Bayard's two sisters (who are never named) went to stay with "yo' gran'pappy" in Memphis when the Colonel went off to fight (20). There are no other references to Bayard's grandfather in the fictions, but given the fact that the rest of Colonel John's family (his mother, his sister Virginia and his brother Bayard) were living in "Carolina" at this time, it seems most likely that this Memphis man is Bayard's maternal grandfather, identified in The Unvanquished (1838) as a man named Millard; that later work identifies him as a Memphis businessman.
