Biography:

Sam Fathers' mother was "a slave woman" who was impregnated by a Chickasaw chief (282). The magazine version of "The Bear" also calls her "a Negro slave" (294), but says nothing more about her. Go Down, Moses (1942) explains that after she becomes pregnant, the chief (identified there as Ikkemotubbe) marries her to a enslaved man, which explains Sam's last name - "Fathers," short for "Had-Two-Fathers." The magazine version of "The Old People" features a similar story, but there, the slave woman and Chickasaw chief are referred to as Sam's grandparents.
