Although technically these events could take place in mid-November 1941, we set the date as 1940 for a number of reasons. The draft was enacted on September 16, 1940, and the United States entered World War II on December 7, 1941. According to Blotner's biography, Faulkner wrote the story in early March of 1941, and the Saturday Evening Post published it in May of 1941 (1070). Given this framework, 1940 seems most likely.
