Biography:

Ringo, the same age as Bayard Sartoris, stands as Bayard's constant childhood companion. Although a slave, he holds a special place in the Sartoris household, treated by the whites in some respects as a white child. Ringo leads the search for the stolen mules and rides with Bayard and Colonel Sartoris. On the other hand, there are minstrel show elements in the scene that depicts him trying to mount a horse. While virtually all the characters in the story refer to him as Ringo, Granny (Rosa Millard) will only address him by the full name he was given, Marengo (the name of Napoleon's horse). He always calls her "Granny."
