Summary:

This is a difficult passage to follow. Ned is speaking about what happened when the swap of horse for car was made, and how he and Bobo planned to use the horse race to win both car and horse back, but he uses the conditional tense - "then the white man would ask," etc. - so it is impossible to know how much of the plan he outlines actually happened before, as he tells Grandfather and van Tosch, "yawl come and ruint it" (286).
