Biography:

Linda is the natural daughter of Eula Varner Snopes and a Frenchman's Bend suitor. Gavin Stevens sees her at "thirteen, maybe fourteen now"(140) crossing the Square in Jefferson, and Chick identifies her with Gavin as "just walking on past us exactly like a pointer dog walks just before it freezes onto the birds" (138). In spite of lacking her mother's voluptuous appeal, Linda nevertheless attracts the male gaze from individuals ranging from Matt Levitt to Gavin Stevens. Stevens, presumably "forming her mind" with books of poems and ice cream concoctions, seeks to rescue her by insisting that she pursue her post-secondary education somewhere beyond Jefferson, but Flem Snopes thwarts this effort. When Flem offers Linda the opportunity to attend the nearby University of Mississippi, she readily accepts with thanks, even calling him "Daddy" (xxxx). While Eula exacts a promise from Gavin that he will marry her daughter, Linda herself is reluctant to accept his conditional offer of matrimony. At the end of the novel, Linda is released from her Jefferson ties by her "father" and leaves Jefferson for Greenwich Village.
