Summary: 

Driving out "the long road" to the cemetery, Chick is struck by how deserted the roads and the farms along them are, especially by the absence of the Negroes who should have been visible (143). Near the end of the journey he sees one Negro plowing a field, and for a moment they look "eye to eye into each other's face" (145).
