Summary:
Dewey Dell goes inside the drugstore with MacGowan. Outside, alone in the town square, Vardaman's thoughts become increasingly difficult to follow. He is extremely anxious about Darl having gone "crazy" (251), and about the emptiness of the square. At times he seems to be anticipating what happens the next day, when Darl is taken away on the train and he and his family eat bananas while waiting to leave town.
