Henry Armstid appears in the story at the auction; he comes "Shoving up to the gate in them patched overalls and one of them dangle-armed shirts of hisn" (169). He is a poor and foolish farmer who, in spite of his wife’s protests, squanders her hard-earned five dollars on a horse that he cannot catch. He eventually breaks his leg trying. He may be the Armstid in As I Lay Dying and Light in August though in the first novel his wife's name is Lula while in Light in August and the Snopes trilogy her name is Martha.
