Summary:

With Flem, Lump, Eck, Wallstreet and five men listening, Ratliff switches from speculating to relating the work that Mrs. Armstid has to do in order to pay Mrs. Littlejohn for Henry Armstid's board, while also planting the crop and keeping the children fed. In this sequence, Mrs. Armstid has to move between Mrs. Littlejohn's hotel and her own farm, balancing the responsibilities of both settings, even while her oldest daughter guards the children with an axe.
