Summary: 

After the death of his wife, Houston adopts a spartan lifestyle for the next four years. He releases his female cook, sells his mare, and gives away his chickens. He returns all of the new furniture, keeping only a stove, kitchen table and cot. He even tries to live in the old house for one night, but loses even his ability to grieve in the house of his father.
