Summary:

Through the "gutted and gullied" landscape of the pasture, Ike runs, finding the "wall" of smoke and running into to it in order to save the cow (190). Here, Ike is confronted by a panicked horse until the horse gallops straight at him and the cow and the three of them tumble down the hill. The horse immediately gallops away and, with repeated effort, the pair escape the ditch, the cow moving first along the ravine to the creek and Ike following her.
