Description:

A mill that turns grain into flour, the grist mill is located beside the store in "Hand Upon the Waters" and is where the inquest into Lonnie Grinnup's death occurs: "before the open door of which the clean Saturday overalls and shirts and the bared heads and the sunburned necks striped with the white razor lines of Saturday neck shaves were densest and quietest" (72). This commercial space that is turned into a public courtroom - much like the two country stores in "Barn Burning" that also become makeshift courtrooms - speaks to the grist mill's importance within the community: "There was a table and three chairs where the coroner and two witnesses sat" (72).
