Summary:

Cass reminds Ike about how "Lee's battle-order" for his army's first invasion of the North was lost by a Confederate and found, accidentally, by "a Yankee Intelligence officer" in early September, 1862 (272). This is a well-known piece of CIvil War lore, and often cited as a reason Lee's invasion was turned back at "Sharpsburg," as Cass and the South generally referred to the Battle of Antietam (272).
