As Ike reads the ledger in 1883, he is brought to the horrifying realization that Old Carothers had sex with "his own daughter" to conceive Tomey's Turl; while the lantern Ike is reading by at midnight "smokes and stinks," he seems to see that daughter's mother Eunice "walking into the icy creek" half a century earlier, committing suicide when her daughter's pregnancy led her to the same discovery (257).
