Description:

To serve as the plantation house at the center of the Issetibbeha's property, his father, Doom, had part of an abandoned steamboat dragged twelve miles through the woods and set on a "knoll, surrounded by oak trees . . . one story in height." "[C]hipped and flaked gilding of . . . rococo cornices" adorn the house and the "gilt lettering of the stateroom names above the jalousied doors" can still be seen (317).
Doom's previous "house" consisted of a "brick wall . . . against which was propped a thatched lean-to divided into rooms and littered with bones and refuse set in the center of ten thousands acres of matchless parklike forest where deer grazed like domestic cattle" (318).
