Jefferson's one movie theater - which the narrative calls "the picture show" - is located on the Square not far from the Allnite Inn (215). From what Charles Mallison thinks as he walks toward it, lately it has been showing a number of "war pictures" (215).

The road the story refers to as "the Memphis highway" leaves the Square and heads northwest, as we can tell when Max Harriss races his car across the Square and skids into the "highway" on his way out of town (213-14).

Russia is mentioned in two different contexts in "Knight's Gambit." First, Charles Mallison, thinking about World War II in 1941, believes that the British have "stopped [Germany] on the west" and so there is no fighting left but on the war's eastern front, "the plumbless depths of Russia" (205). Also, it is in Paris that Gavin Stevens meets the woman who "had escaped from Moscow" after the Russian Revolution.

Gavin Stevens refers to "Yoknapatawpha Consolidated" in his listing of schools, this one distinct from Jefferson High (172). Typically a 'consolidated' school serves a sparsely populated area, where a number of grades are consolidated into one building - often even one room.

The fences that Harriss builds around his plantation are made from "carefully panelled and railed oak and hickory designed in Virginia and Long Island" (241), and the rock that Captain Gualdres uses to construct jumps on his steeplechase course on the Harriss plantation is imported "all the way from eastern Tennessee and Virginia" (175).

Mottstown is located to the south of Jefferson, outside Yoknapatawpha. It figures in a number of Faulkner's fictions, from The Sound and the Fury to The Town. In "Knight's Gambit" is it used as a location from which local girls in Mississippi grow up.
