This is the "United States military force" that "burned the Square and the business district" during the Civil War (37).

"Bee" was a newly appointed general from South Carolina when the battle of "First Manassas" was fought (36); although the text does not mention it, he was mortally wounded during the fighting there. (First Manassas is the Southern name for the first battle of Bull Run.)
