Description:

To serve as the plantation house at the center of the Choctaw settlement, Issetibbeha's father Doom had the one-story "deck house" of an abandoned steamboat dragged twelve miles through the woods and set on a "knoll, surrounded by oak trees"; "chipped and flaked gilding" and "rococo cornices" adorn the house and the "gilt lettering of the stateroom names above the jalousied doors" can still be seen (317). Doom's previous "house" consisted of a "brick wall . . . against which was propped a thatched lean-to divided into rooms and littered with bones and refuse set in the center of ten thousands acres of matchless parklike forest where deer grazed like domestic cattle" (318).
