Description:

Most of the story takes place in Amiens, France. The area around the city saw heavy fighting in 1918, during Germany's last campaign of World War I, though the city itself was not captured. Located in Amiens are: the Cloche-Clos nightclub, "full of noise and smoke" and crowded with French soldiers and civilians celebrating the Armistice when the story's characters arrive (411); the nearby plaza, "empty" at night, so quiet that the narrator can "hear the faint water in the fountain" and "the sound of a band" playing somewhere in the distance (424); and also nearby, through an "arch" and up "an alley," a brothel (The literal translation of "Cloche-Clos" is "closed bell.")
