The Hamlet, 32 (Event)

Ratliff tells the men how Ab was "soured" by being shot during the Civil War. When Ratliff told this story a few pages earlier, he says Ab was shot by "Colonel John Sartoris his self" while trying to steal Sartoris' stallion (18), but in this vaguer account, he says Ab was shot by "somebody that never even owned the horses" he was trying to steal (32). (This event is also recounted in "Barn Burning" and The Town; in the first, it's specifically a "provost man" who shoots Ab, and in the second, a "picket," the soldier who would have been standing guard over the horses. No text gives any indication where this event took place.)
