Biography:

Walter Ewell appears in all of Faulkner's hunting stories, where he is usually identified as a very sure shot with his rifle. In this story, on the other hand, his main contribution is to be the first man to mention "school" in connection with the narrator (297).

Note:
Dasher has this "Walter Ewell" as Walter II, and chronologically he should be - but no indication in story that this is not same "Walter Ewell" as in earlier stories. And Faulkner shifts other characters' ages/birthdates around just as much. Sharp Shooter Hunting Walter Ewell is one of Major de Spain's hunting buddies in the 1870s and 1880s. He is the most proficient of the white hunters, known for his unerring aim with a rifle.
