Wall Snopes (originally Wallstreet Panic) is a determined and ambitious son of his honest father, Eck: "Every morning Wall would get up before schooltime, as the days got shorter he would get up in the dark, to build a fire in the iron stove and sweep out the store and as soon as he got back after school in the afternoon he would be the delivery boy too, using a wheel barrow" (135). He believes in the value of an education, entering kindergarten as a pre-adolescent and making rapid progress through the grades. He proposes marriage to the schoolteacher who gave him his first formal education, then marries the girl she picks out for him instead. As an adult, the young man "who was never a Snopes, never in this world a Snopes" (152) becomes an honest and successful owner of a prosperous grocery business, bringing modern retail and wholesale methods to Yoknapatawpha. Throughout his rise he refuses to take any help from his relative, Flem Snopes.
