Photo Gallery: Vicksburg, Mississippi
Vicksburg played a major role during the Civil War as the last Confederate strong point on the Mississippi River; the report of its capture by the Union at the beginning of The Unvanquished sets the novel's tone. The first two photographs below were made by Walker Evans; the third by Dorothea Lange. They were probably the most famous of the photographers who worked for the Farm Security Administration during the Great Depression.
