Notes:

Wasn't sure about location for this event -- could be Sartoris Cabin or Hawkhurst. I opted for Cabin, since it begins "we had just heard" -- focusing more on the reception of this letter -- but it is a letter FROM Hawkhurst, and it includes information spanning a longer period of time (more than a year) and another place (fighting in Carolina).

Summary:

A letter from Louisa Hawk reveals that Drusilla, who had been missing for nearly a year, is fighting with Colonel John Sartoris in Carolina, "riding with the troop like she was a man" (149). Faulkner here refers to the boys having received "the letter" that Louisa sends about Drusilla, but when in fact they describe reading this in "Skirmish at Sartoris" it is after Granny has died. "Skirmish" takes place after the events of this chapter, but was published before Faulkner wrote the chapter as the short story "The Unvanquished," which probably accounts for his confusion.
