Although Ratliff calls them "boys," the five frustrated suitors who "bushwack" McCarron "in the buggy to drag him out of it and maybe beat him up or anyhow skeer him out of Frenchman's Bend" are well past puberty, and probably young adults (105). Two of them are doubtless the two former suitors who (like McCarron) flee Yoknapatawpha when Eula's pregnancy is disclosed.
