Biography:

The children Addie taught before her marriage are described only from her point of view, which is an avowedly hateful one. To her, they are represented by their "little dirty snuffling nose[s]" (169). She takes pleasure in the thought that when she whips them for "faulting" in school, she becomes part of their "secret and selfish" lives (170).

Note:
I have put New Hope church as a place holder because I could not find Addie's Schoolhouse or Schoolhouse where Addie teaches -- perhaps I missed it. Addie explains how she felt about the schoolchildren she taught, how she waited until “the last one had left with his little dirty snuffling nose” (169) and she would go by the spring to be quiet and hate them. She tells us that she “looked forward to the times when they faulted, so [she] could whip them” (170).
