These poor people, who are housed by the county, know about Mr. Hait's death and have "heard that Mrs. Hait had got eight thousand dollars for him" (242).

Note: 
TMT: JBC listed the class as poor white, even though Old Het is black. It's not clear that Het actually lives there: "That is, she used the poorhouse to sleep in or anyway pass most or at least part of the night in" (241); during the days, she mills around Jefferson. I think it's reasonable to assume that the "regular" residents at the poorhouse are white and that Het is a kind of anomaly, but I won't insist on the point. In the end, I decided that "Lower Class" covered the most bases.
