Biography:

This man works for the Sartoris family and drives a horse-drawn carriage rather than a car. He is holding the reins when Mr. Buffaloe drives his homemade automobile "into the square at the moment when Colonel Sartoris the banker's surrey and blooded matched team were crossing it on the way home" (12). (He is probably Simon Strother, but this novel doesn't give any details about him so that identification is too speculative; on the other hand, when this same event is described in The Mansion, the unnamed Negro coachman is described with details that make it clear that Faulkner is thinking of Simon.)
