Biography:

When Monk is arraigned, he tries to "make a speech" before this "J.P." - Justice of the Peace (42).

Note:
CUT: Faulkner describes this attempt as an "opportunity to bridge the hitherto abyss bettween himself and the living world" (42). What fails to be communicated to the JP and everyone else, however, is Monk's total incompetence for trial. As the narrator puts it, "he should never have gone to the penitentiary at all" (41).
