Biography:

The people of Jefferson become spectators on two different occasions in the novel. In the chapter titled "Retreat" Bayard notes that "the people along the street" listened to Uncle Buck's rant, "smiling where he couldn't see it" (51). And in "An Odor of Verbena" they join the men of John Sartoris' troop and "follow" Bayard to Redmond's office; he is conscious of their "remote still eyes" (247) When the showdown is over, they "begun to run" to see the outcome and one of them supposedly shouts, "Have you killed that boy, too?" (249).
