Biography: 

The first people Ratliff encounters upon returning to Jefferson after his misadventure at the hunting camp. Two of them ask about his facial injuries - one in standard English, one in a country vernacular - and their questions provide Ratliff with a way to begin his story. They don't seem to be the "you" (67), however, to whom he "is telling" the story itself (63).
