Biography:

The "Uncle Buck" who appears in this story is described more like a poor white than a member of the upper class McCaslin family that emerges in later fictions. He stops Bayard and Ringo as they head through town, and regales a confederate officer with his sarcastic but fond account of the exploits of John Sartoris. Shouting his words, he "sounds just like a hen," and when he runs out of breath "the tobacco" he's chewing runs out of his mouth and onto his beard (22). In "Retreat" there is no mention of his twin brother "Buddy," who will be incorporated into the novel version of the story, or of the McCaslins as a family.
