Description:

On the day they hunt Old Ben, Uncle Ike places Quentin "on [a] stand" (191) in a "part of the bottom" he has never seen before (192). A hunting stand can be a platform attached to a tree, but in Faulkner's hunting stories it is more likely just to be a position where the hunter is supposed to remain, typically with his back against a tree, until the hunting horn blows everyone in. Quentin's stand is "under a gum tree beside the bayou, where the black, still water ran out of the cane and across a little clearing and back into the cane again" (192; this is also how, later in his career, Faulkner will describe the spot where Ike himself, now a boy the same age as Quentin in this story, will stand in Go Down, Moses). Though Quentin gets "scared" while on his stand (192), it is "a half mile away" from the rest of the hunt 193) - perhaps because the adult men in charge of the hunt for Old Ben want to make sure Quentin is safe.
