CUT: In an ostensible effort to retrieve the missing brass, Flem Snopes sends Tomey's Turl to search for it at Tom Tom's house. Turl, who has been having an affair with Tom Tom's wife, arrives to find "Tom Tom lying fully dressed beneath the quilt with a naked butcher knife" (27).

Summary:

Charles repeats what Gowan saw and heard "from Turl at first hand" about how Flem continues to pit the power plant's Negro firemen against each other as part of his scheme to embezzle the brass (23).
