Less than one hundred miles from Yoknapatawpha, Shiloh, Tennessee, was the scene of one of the bloodiest battles of the Civil War. In the South it was more commonly referred to as the Battle of Pittsburgh Landing, the name Faulkner uses in Absalom, Absalom! The fighting took place over two days (April 6-7, 1862). Almost 25,000 men were wounded or killed.
