Summary: 

In a very compressed passage Quentin remembers his recent train and trolley trip and thinks about the trip he will soon take to go back to the bridge "arching into silence darkness sleep" (172). He seems to see himself as two people, coming and going back ("my face his face," 172), unless he is thinking of some unidentifiable other male.
