Biography:

The sheriff of Yoknapatawpha in this story has the first name "Hub." He isn't given a last name, but it's very likely that he is one of the three Hampton's who serve as county sheriff in the fictions - one of the two nicknamed Hub (short for Hubert) - and the Hub Hampton who also appears in Intruder in the Dust (1948), The Town (1957) and The Mansion (1960). A friend of Gavin Stevens, he is described as "a big man with little hard eyes" (116). He has been the sheriff "off and on" for quite a while and likes to quote the Bible when talking with Gavin (115). According to the narrator, the Sheriff speaks and moves "with that deliberate, slightly florid, old-fashioned courtesy which only big men can wear, except that his was constant" (128).
