Popeye is taken to jail in the small Alabama town where the murder he is accused of committing occured. Popeye initially refuses to have a laywer defend his case but then accepts "a young man just out of law school" (311) to do the job. The trial lasts a day after which time the jury find Popeye guilty. Popeye accepts the verdict with indifference. A Memphis lawyer visits Popeye at the prison and tries to convince him to appeal but Popeye refuses. On the night before his execution a minister tries to pray with Popeye but he remains detached. Popeye is executed by hanging.

Summary:

Popeye denies being in the town where the deputy was shot, but refuses to do anything to help himself at trial. He is convicted and - still without any sign of resistance - executed by hanging for the murder he did not commit.
