Narcissa and Gowan come into the house, and Narcissa introduces Gowan to Horace. Benbow Sartoris comes in; after Horace and Gowan discuss the universities they attended, Benbow Sartoris tells the assembled group that Gowan has a "jelly" (25) in Oxford. Narcissa asks Horace about Belle and Little Belle. They all retire to the dining room for supper.

Summary: 

Horace stays overnight at his sister's house near Jefferson on his way back to Kinston. Horace and Miss Jenny watch Narcissa and Gowan walk in the garden, just as they do again in the spring.
