Summary:
General Sherman burns Jackson. (Historically, Sherman was a leader of the Union forces that captured Jackson during Grant's campaign against Vicksburg, and before they withdrew from the city these forces destroyed much of it. Sherman's report emphasizes the destruction of railway lines and other military targets; the state house and governor's mansion, however, were not harmed.)
