Notes:

There's a typo in this Vintage edition that was introduced in the first edition. In line 18, "Odlethrop" is misspelled as "Oglethrop." The name is correct in the May 1937 volume of Scribner's in which it first appeared.
The narrator and Gavin Stevens learn that "Monk Odlethrop, apparently leading an abortive jailbreak, had killed the warden with the warden's own pistol, in cold blood" (50).

Summary:

The Memphis newspapers report that Monk has killed the penitentiary warden. Given Monk's devotion to the warden, this act makes little sense; Monk is even knitting a sweater for the warden at the time of the shooting.
