Summary:

Uncle Gavin relates the news about Clarence Snopes' first political defeat to his nephew Charles Mallison when his nephew returns from the war. This may be Faulkner's belated attempt to identify the narrative of Clarence Snopes' public life - pages 325-37 - as an account that Uncle Gavin 'told' to Charles, but this assertion doesn't resolve the many inconsistencies with that. At best, the narrative can be seen as a paraphrase of what Gavin (and sometimes Ratliff) "say."
