Notes:

Time note: This whole section is frustrating because it relies on the ledge in Flem's house as an anchor date. All of these events appear to occur during the moment when the house is being reworked but after Eula has been buried till about the time when Ratliff finds out that Flem has a ledge installed. In short, this was a huge pain to date and accuracy is fairly limited. JB

Summary:

Gavin Stevens returns from his trip to New York and Ratliff realizes that Gavin will never be free from his commitment to Eula and daughter because he wants to "dedicate forever his capacity for responsibility to something that wouldn't have no end to its appetite" (182).
