This particular scene has been bugging me for some time. I initially thought that Wat discovered the ledge, but it is the yard boy. The implication is that Wat came over for dinner and installed the ledge. - JB
Summary:
Ratliff continues relating what he learned from the yard boy, recounting how a year later Wat Snopes comes over for dinner and when he finally leaves the yard boy goes into Flem's room discovers the one anomaly in the mansion, a "re-affirmation" and "warning" for Flem that takes the form of a wooden ledge by the fireplace that the banker likes to rest his feet on (174).
