Description:

The narrator suggests that Maxey's barber shop is a typical "three-chair country shop" (141). Jefferson barber shops appear in a number of Yoknapatawpha fictions. (In "Dry September," which was published four months before "Hair," the barber shop is even owned by Hawkshaw, who in this story works for the owner, Maxey.) Typically Faulkner's barber shops are all-male environments, though no one in this story seems to see anything unusual about the fact that Susan Reed gets her hair cut there as both a girl and a young woman.
