Biography:

Isaac "Uncle Ike" McCaslin is the central character in Go Down, Moses. In Intruder in the Dust he is "still alive at ninety" (91). In that earlier novel he is also Lucas Beauchamp's cousin, and shares Charles McCaslin's concern about social justice, but this novel doesn't locate him in either of those contexts. Instead, Chick thinks of him along with the other great men his grandfather told him about - the hunters who pursued "deer and bear and wild turkey . . . within twelve miles of Jefferson" (90) - just as he is about to set out on his own adventure beyond the Nine-Mile Branch.
