Description:
In Faulkner's landscapes a "bottom" is the low land that lies along a stream or river. The "swamp four miles away [from the settlement] known as Hurricane Bottoms" - the spot where the militia men capture the gang of outlaws - does not appear by that name elsewhere in Faulkner's Yoknapatawpha fictions (201). However, Hurricane Creek, occasionally called Harrykin Creek, flows through a number of those texts, where like the real Hurricane Creek in Lafayette County, it flows northward into the Tallahatchie River.
